A couple of months ago, Total MK told how one lady was turning her garden into a Hogspital to care for some of our many injured and struggling hedgehogs in the new city.
Since opening its doors in July, Caroline Mills and her team of volunteers have cared for 54 of the mammals.
Demand has been so high that, heartbreakingly, they have had to turn hogs away on some occasions due to lack of space.
Now, Nash Hedgehog Rescue is asking for community support so that the charity can help even more of our prickly pals.
A second shed has been purchased, which will be converted into a dedicated intensive care and isolation unit.
“Right now, all of our rescues are housed together in a single hogspital,” Carole said, “Separating our patients will allow us to give the sickest hedgehogs the quiet, specialised care they need.
“This will give us a separate space for our most poorly hedgehogs, away from those who are recovering, as well as increasing the number of hedgehogs we are able to care for.”
The team are planning to do much of the work themselves, to ensure costs are kept as low as possible, but in order to turn the space into a safe, warm and practical rescue space, there is much to be done.
“We need to insulate and line it, install electrics and easy-clean flooring, and equip it with worktops, storage, a sink, heat pads, scales, feeding equipment and all the other bits and pieces needed to care for our patients,” Caroline said.
“We'll be doing as much of the work ourselves as possible, and every pound raised will go towards helping the hedgehogs in our care and getting our new ICU up and running.”
A GoFundMe Campaign has been launched to help raise the £2k necessary.
Every penny will help progress towards that target and deliver essential care to these mammals who are in decline and need our help now.
